Money doesn’t grow on trees but there is surely a lot of it. The amount of US dollars in circulation, 1984-2017.
When people say that the Federal Reserve is printing money during QE (quantitative easing), they don’t mean it literally. However, that seems like the case after looking at this chart from the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis. The amount of US dollars in circulation has doubled since the recession and currently 1.575 trillion dollars are in circulation. One would think that with the advances in new electronic payment systems like Apply Pay, Samsung Pay and long history of digital transactions through Visa, Mastercard & Paypal, the amount of cash in circulation should reduce. Contrary to that, actual currency circulation growth at 6-7%, almost twice the GDP growth.
The Federal Reserve bank estimates about half of the currency is held outside US, which includes almost 75% of the $100 bills. Several countries include US dollar as their official currency, including Ecuador & Zimbabwe. For surprisingly large number of countries, including North Korea & Afghanistan, US dollar is the preferred currency.
There is lot of technology goes into printing money, but overall ratio of fake money is pretty low. See this New Yorker article trying to figure out why digital money has not killed the cash yet.
